Shelton Helping Hands Fund
The Shelton Helping Hands funds addresses the broader, more urgent needs of families in crisis to directly improve the health and well-being of children in our public schools. The fund was established by the generosity of Board President David Shelton in 2017. At the time, social workers in Wilkes County Schools had access to resources for smaller needs, but when families faced major challenges, like housing instability or urgent transportation issues, their hands were often tied.
Close to 1 in four children in Wilkes live at or below the poverty line. Their families struggle to make ends meet, but typically “get by” until something unexpected happens. Thanks to this fund, school social workers step in and lend the “helping hand” families need to weather the crisis.
The program is administered by April Marr, director of student services for Wilkes County Schools. Marr said that the fund has been “life changing” for the students and families it serves, providing vital needs like clothing, mattresses, hygiene items, fuel for winter months, and more.
For example, In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, families had a ready source of aid for unexpected fuel and food costs. Since the program’s beginning, over $117,685 has been invested in the students and families in Wilkes County Schools.
