Since 1991, The Health Foundation has been dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the people who call Wilkes County, North Carolina home.
One way we do this is through the Teeth in Need Fund, which pays for preventative dental care like cleanings as well as treatment for emergent dental issues, like fixing a cavity or pulling a tooth.
We also have the Shelton Helping Hands Fund, administered by school social workers in the Wilkes County schools that provides a “helping hand” in an emergency. This fund has helped cover security deposits for housing, put groceries in the fridge, mattresses on a bedframe, and so much more.
Be our Valentine today and bring a smile to the face of a child!

Your Health Foundation is mission-driven, with a vision that you–and everyone in Wilkes County–is healthy, safe, and living life to its fullest potential. That’s why, since 1991, we’ve supported the people, programs, and processes that make a difference.
One of the loveliest aspects of our work is seeing the community come together and put into motion those ideals. And whether it is hearing the joyful voices of children playing or witnessing the quiet relief that comes when help and care are there when needed, knowing that collectively we’ve improved and saved lives is about as good as it gets.
Our core strategy is to bring together people from across the county who, together, are identifying, designing, and implementing the programs and services most needed here. With the help of your charitable gifts, we’re building a better tomorrow for all Wilkes Countians by investing in the collective wisdom we gain from these processes.
I have often said that when you support The Health Foundation, you never know who you may help—it could be a friend, a family member, or even yourself. No matter your age or stage in life, your Health Foundation is working tirelessly to make Wilkes County a place you can take pride in calling “home.” We know that be investing in the places people live, work, play, pray, and learn we can improve the length and quality of all our lives.
Thank you. As a member, you are part of an ever-growing circle of supporters who, together, are contributing to a healthier community. In unity, we uncover joy.
—Executive Director Heather Murphy

Residents in 25 western counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians impacted by Hurricane Helene can apply for help buying food through the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) which will begin on Oct. 18, 2024, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced. D-SNAP is open to individuals and households not currently receiving Food and Nutrition Services benefits who were impacted by Hurricane Helene. NCDHHS estimates more than 150,000 people will apply for up to $120 million in D-SNAP benefits.
