If a doctor, nurse, or other medical professional was there for you on the worst day, this is your chance to say, “Thank you.”
March 30 is Doctor’s Day, and we’re inviting you to share a short message honoring a doctor who made a difference. Messages from patients and friends are gathered into a keepsake booklet and delivered to doctors across Wilkes County.
A small gift made in their honor supports our vision that everyone in Wilkes is safe, healthy, and able to thrive. All while funding student scholarships that invest in the future of health care right here at home!

The Health Foundation is quite proud to partner with The Wilkes County Schools, and we are deeply saddened by the death of its superintendent, Mark Byrd. I first met Mark when we were collaborating on introducing programs to support student health and well-being. I was struck by his passion, knowledge, and commitment to both students and faculty. It was always my pleasure to work with him, as it was so evident he cared deeply.
As a member of the Wilkes Hall of Fame I got to see him interact with future student leaders. I remember one forum in which we were asked how each of us would define success. Some said title, others said money. I recall talking about the great privilege I found in doing meaningful work to make a difference in the world. Mark beamed and nodded.
I have a small framed work of art in my office with a quotation that sums it up for me. Today I post it in remembrance of Mark Byrd, in hopes too, that each of us will be inspired to do our part as we navigate our grief and heartache.
“To live well, laugh often and love much
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children,
To earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends
To always look for the best in others and give the best of one’s self
To make the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, garden patch or a redeemed social condition
To know that even one life breathes more easily because you live
This is to succeed.”
God’s peace,
Heather Murphy

After all, it is the love that you, our contributors, partners, and friends show through your thoughts, words, deeds, and gifts that ensure we can be responsive to the needs of the community.
We can’t send you flowers or chocolates, but we can send our hopes that you enjoy a very, very happy and healthy Valentine’s Day! 💗💗💗#valentinesday #nonprofit

When one in five neighbors is struggling to afford food, our whole community feels it. With local aid stretched thin, hardworking families and our elderly neighbors don’t know how they’ll put food on the table.
You can help, right now, through our first-ever Virtual Food Drive. Your donation stays right here in Wilkes County, buying food in bulk (and at low cost) that goes directly to local pantries serving our families and seniors. Every dime and dollar you donate to this fund will be used to purchase food and ensure that it gets to the people who need it most.
Link to donate in the comments, or scan the QR code to go directly to our donation page.
